DupliWalker documentation

DupliWalker finds duplicate files and identical folders across the locations you point it at, and gives you the evidence to decide what to remove.

It is built around a single idea: deleting a file is the only step you cannot undo, so everything before it is read-only and reversible. Scanning does not change your files. Comparing does not change your files. You decide what goes, and you confirm it.

The four steps

  1. Scan — choose the folders to inspect, and start a search.
  2. Understand — read the grouped results: which copies exist, and where.
  3. Verify — open any two files side by side and confirm they really are the same before acting on them.
  4. Clean up — select the redundant copies and remove them, deliberately.

Most of the time you will spend the longest on step 3, and that is the point.

Running DupliWalker

DupliWalker runs in your browser at app.dupliwalker.com. There is nothing to install, and the address is stable — bookmark it, or reach it from Launch DupliWalker anywhere on this site.

A desktop application is also available. The two share the same workbench and the same concepts; where their behaviour differs — chiefly in how each reaches your files — the difference is called out on the page it affects.

Inside the application, Help → DupliWalker Documentation brings you back here, and Home on the toolbar returns you to this site.

If something looks wrong

  • No results, or fewer than you expected? Start with what counts as a duplicate — the usual cause is that the files differ in a way the filename hides.
  • A whole folder shown as one result is intentional. See identical folders.
  • Terms you have not seen before are defined in the glossary, and the FAQ answers the questions people ask first.
