Glossary

The terms below are the ones you will meet in the application.

Common duplicate

A file that exists in both your Reference folders and your Dupli folders. The safest thing to clean up: the copy you are keeping is one you nominated in advance. A file can be both Common and Own.

Duplicate group

A set of files whose content matches. Groups, not individual files, are the unit you make decisions about — see duplicate groups.

Dupli folder

A folder you are inspecting or cleaning up: where removable copies are expected to live. Cleanup acts on Dupli folders only.

Exact duplicate

A file whose content is identical to another’s, regardless of name, location or date. Two exact duplicates are interchangeable.

Identical folder

A folder whose entire contents match another folder’s. Reported as a single result rather than one result per file inside — see identical folders.

Non-duplicate

A file with no matching copy in the scanned locations. Nothing to do.

Own duplicate

Copies that occur within one side — several copies inside your Dupli folders, for instance, with no counterpart in Reference. You choose which one to keep.

Reclaimable space

How much disk space you would recover by reducing each group to a single copy. Always less than the total size of all duplicates, because one copy per group is kept.

Reference folder

A folder holding the copies you intend to keep. Marking a folder as Reference both nominates its copies as the keepers and keeps them out of cleanup. See Dupli and Reference folders.

Session

Your current working state — the folders you selected, the results of your search, and how you have arranged the workbench.

Show All File Groups

A view setting that expands identical-folder results back into the individual file groups inside them. Available from the View menu. Presentation only: it changes nothing about what was found or what a cleanup would do.

Workflow

A packaged, repeatable sequence of steps in the application, offered through the Workflow Gallery and the Guided Tour.
